Albanian President Hopes Italy to Increase Presence in Balkan Region

TIRANA, Apr 5, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Albanian President Rexhep Meidani proposed here Friday that Italy should increase its presence in Balkan region, ATA news agency reported.

"In the framework of the regional cooperation" and with the aim to create economic and political space in Balkan region, I invite Italy to be more present in the region," said Meidani.

During his meeting with Italian Senate Chairman Marcello Pera, Meidani said the cooperation between the two countries was "very good" and said that Albania would be a "main gate" in the region for Italy.

He expressed thanks for Italian government's assistance to Albania in all fields and demanded Italy to support Albania in the process of integration into European Union (EU) and NATO.
