Europe Set to Improve Trade Links
Balkan countries participating at a conference of the Organization
for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have pledged to
promote mutual trade and investment. At a meeting in Vienna, Austria,
government representatives from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia,
FYR Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, and F.R. Yugoslavia promised to
improve their countries' business environment and increase coherence
and transparency of their legislation. The declaration is expected
to accelerate the activity of the South East Europe Stability Pact,
launched in Sarajevo in 1999. Donors from the U.S. and the European
Union have contributed 5.4 billion euro to the Stability Pact established
to promote political, economic, and social cooperation in the region.
Only half of the funds have been disbursed to-date. (Source: The
