On October 7, 1999, the Council of Ministers of Albania has issued a decree that authorized tenders for the privatization of four major enterprises. They include a pharmaceutical company, a winery, a dairy and a brewery. Here is a short description of each enterprise. "PROFARMA" J.S.C. - Pharmaceutical Company. Established in 1948, this joint stock company is 100% state owned. Located at Rruga Qemal Stafa, no. 350 in Tirana, it currently employs 184 people. PROFARMA produces 130 products in four production lines including infusions, perfusions, pills and vitamins, and gallenics (creams, ointments, syrups, drops and suppositories). These products are distributed through the state controlled wholesale distributor, FUFARMA. The enterprise has been profitable since 1992. The plant and offices are located in an industrial zone on 24,000 sq. meters, of which 7,000 are developed. Pill and infusion lines have modern equipment (5 years). Sales in 1996 were $3.5 million. High quality control standards are maintained by sophisticated laboratory equipment and well-trained staff.

"AJKA" J.S.C. - Dairy Products Company. Founded in 1995, the company is located at Rruga 5 Maji, in Tirana, employing 40 persons. It is a joint stock company formed by a grant from the German agency for technical assistance (GTZ) and an existing Albanian state-owned dairy. AJKA is the leading manufacturer of dairy products in Albania. Products include 2% homogenized milk, 2% natural and natural liquid yogurt, fruit yogurt, butter, curd, pastry cream, and cheese, including Edamer and Mozzarella. It serves Tirana and Durres markets. The firm shows positive cash flow with strong prospects for growth. It has no debt and the majority of liabilities are owed to the state or as accounts payable. The factory is located in an industrial zone on 9,123 sq. meters, of which 3,864 are occupied. The building contains a processing unit, collection center, laboratories, tankers, a large boiler and other essential equipment.

"BIRRO MALTO" J.S.C. - Brewery. Albania’s leading brewery, this Tirana based company was founded in 1961. It is located on Rruga e Kavajes, ish Kombinati Ushqimor. It was established in 1998 as a 100% state-owned joint stock company. It produces pasteurized lager beer under the brand name "Birra Tirana" that is marketed primarily in the Tirana and Durres area. It has an approximate market share of 30%, producing 80,000 hectoliters in sales. The beer is sold at the factory to approximately 90-100 small private wholesalers. The company is located in an industrial zone, west of Tirana, on a 17,000 sq. meter site. It employs 137 people. Equipment includes a distillery with a daily capacity of 800 hectoliter, with rustproof boilers and pipelines; a refrigerator, with a 100 hectoliter/hour capacity; and an Italian manufactured filtration system.

"GJERGJ KASTRIOTI SKENDERBEU" J.S.C. KANTINA - Distillery and Winery. The leading distillery and winery in Albania, Kantina produces a number of excellent wines including the distinctive "Skenderberg" brandy, well-known throughout Central and Eastern Europe. A profitable company, it has no liabilities and a relatively high book value. It operates from two separate facilities. Established in 1935, it became a joint stock company in 1995. Product line includes a number of wines (including Riesling, Cabernet, and Malaga), raki, brandy and aperitifs. Products are mainly marketed in Albania presently, but may soon resume marketing in Central and Eastern Europe region. Kantina began shipments to the United States this year. The company has 280 employees, and is located on Rrushbull Hill, close to the City of Durres, on a 4.3 hectares site. Equipment for distilled products date from the 1960’s; facilities for wine products were installed in 1998..
